UV9364 – Ecosystemic approaches to sustainable and just education
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
The course provides an overview of the current epistemological, ethical and methodological issues about sustainable education, environmental justice, decolonization and social inclusion. The topics are at the centre of the current educational debate in many countries but are also particularly relevant for the most vulnerable categories of people. People with special needs may be strongly affected by future changes in the environment and by the measures we will need to adopt to face environmental challenges. Besides, the growth of environmental migrations will be strictly related to environmental justice, forcing us to reimagine our way of thinking and including migrants. Sustainability will be more and more related not only to ecological footprint but also to the way we consider ourselves parts of a global ecosystem - in which our actions may have long-term and long-range consequences - and how we treat the others with justice and equity.
The main struggle for the future of mankind will be that for environmental justice and well-being. Educators and social workers will be more and more required to integrate an ecosystemic epistemology and sustainable methodologies into their teaching/learning practices.
The course will cover the topics of environmental justice; epistemic injustice; decolonizing education; participatory and sustainable methodologies; and decolonizing inclusion.?
The course is organized in collaboration with the International Environmental Justice Committee of the American Psychological Association - Division 52 International Psychology; and the Network of Excellence Ideas for the Basic Education of the Future. The course will include invited international lectures from members of those organizations and the participation to international online events.
