UV9201 – Basic Course in Quantitative Research Methodology
Course description
Course content
The course covers central topics in quantitative methodology, with a particular focus on validity issues (construct validity, statistical validity, internal and external validity) related to various kinds of inferences drawn from empirical research (interpretations, causal inferences, and generalisations). Validity issues will be discussed in relation to theories of truth as well as to research designs and statistical analyses. The ontological and epistemological basis of quantitative research will be presented, emphasizing critical realism.
Various research designs will be presented and discussed with focus on quasi-experimental and non-experimental designs. Analysis issues will be discussed, with emphasis on principles and limitations of statistical control as a substitute for experimental control.
