MEK3300 – Viscous Flow and Turbulence

Course content

Flow at low Reynolds number: Stokes flow, Oseens solution. Flow at large Reynolds number: Vortex dynamics, stagnation flow, boundary layer flow, non-steady boundary layers, separation and vortex shedding. Forces on bodies due to the flow, drag coefficients. Free shear layers, jets and wakes. Stability, transition to turbulence, turbulent flow. Reynolds averaged equations, turbulent stresses, turbulent diffusivity, mixing length and the k-epsilon model, law of the wall, correlations and spectra.

Learning outcome

To extend the understanding of some important areas of fluid mechanics, and to provide a basis for further studies in fluid mechanics and other branches of science where such knowledge is needed (such as meteorology, oceanography, hydrology, branches of physics and geology). The course is compulsory for specialization in fluid mechanics in the master program Computational Science and Engineering.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

In addition to fulfilling the Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:

  • Mathematics R1 (or Mathematics S1 and S2) + R2

And in addition one of these:

  • Physics (1+2)
  • Chemistry (1+2)
  • Biology (1+2)
  • Information technology (1+2)
  • Geosciences (1+2)
  • Technology and theories of research (1+2)

The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies (in Norwegian).

Recommended previous knowledge

MEK2200 – Continuum Mechanics. It would be an advantage to have taken MEK2300 – Fluid Mechanics (discontinued) (MEK1300 – Introduction to Fluid Mechanics (discontinued)), and INF-MAT3360 – Partial differential equations (discontinued).

10 credits with MEK4300 – Viscous Flow and Turbulence.

10 credits with ME220.

Teaching

4 hours of lectures per week.

Examination

Two compulsory assignments have to be handed in and approved. Final written examination. Letter grading (A-F).

Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English.

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
