The first semester of the Master’s programme starts with courses that give you a foundation for further specialisation towards your Master’s thesis. After this, the study plan varies depending on whether you will be commencing upon a 30 ECTS credit Master’s thesis or a 60 credit Master’s thesis:

? Short thesis: You continue with courses chosen from the programme option’s recommended list and within the specialisation you choose (see the plan above) in the second and third semester. During the third semester you discuss with your supervisor what the topic for your thesis should be. The thesis is carried out in the fourth semester.
? Long thesis: You commence on your Master’s thesis during the second semester and also take courses from the programme option’s recommended list. Which optional courses you should choose, should be discussed with your supervisor. In the second semester you take 10 ECTS credit courses and work on your thesis. The last semester is in its entirety devoted to thesis work.

Recognition of Master courses from former education

If you are admitted to the Masters Programme and you have completed Master courses outside the University of Oslo, you may apply to have these courses recognised as part of your degree. Please contact the Department of Mathematics for more information.
